There is a common assumption that a male role model is a prerequisite for 'normal' male development. The feeling that their contribution isn't valued, or is regarded as inadequate, can be compounded by the fact that there is very little information available for sole mothers about the issues that are likely to arise in their relationships with their sons. This program has been developed to fill this gap. The author has successfully run these group sessions at various community health and family services and women's resource centers. It is designed for sole mothers raising sons up to the age of twelve. Participants are encouraged to share ideas and experiences in a supportive, non-judgmental environment.
This innovative manual is a resource tool for social workers, counselors and psychologists who are interested in doing such group work with sole mothers. The 11 session program is suitable to be run in any agency that works with families, including community health centers, family & children services, and domestic violence agencies. |
