Mothers raising sons without a father's input face a range of concerns. There is a common assumption that a male role model is a prerequisite for 'normal' male development. The feeling that their contribution isn't valued, or is regarded as inadequate, can be compounded by the fact that there is very little information available for sole mothers about the issues that are likely to arise in their relationships with their sons.

This program has been developed to fill this gap. The author has successfully run these group sessions at various community health and family services and women's resource centers. It is designed for sole mothers raising sons up to the age of twelve. Participants are encouraged to share ideas and experiences in a supportive, non-judgmental environment.

The focus is on:
• How boys learn to be men and the idea of 'masculinity'
• How to raise responsible, non-aggressive sons, particularly is there is a risk of a generational cycle of violence
• Setting limits and disciplining boys
• Strengthening the bond that exists between mother and son
