SPPARC: Supporting Partners of People with Aphasia in Relationships and Conversation

by Sarah Lock, Ray Wilkinson & Karen Bryan

SPPARC is a complete resource providing the clinician with the necessary tools to run support and conversation training programmes for partners of people with aphasia either in groups or as individuals.

Full Description:

SPPARC is a complete resource providing the clinician with the necessary tools to run support and conversation training programmes for partners of people with aphasia either in groups or as individuals. It recognises the role of partners in the psychosocial functioning of people with aphasia, and applies conversation analysis so that intervention is targeted directly at the everyday conversations of people with aphasia and their partners. It consists of four elements:

  • The Clinician's Manual: background information for the programmes including step-by-step instructions and a case study;
  • The Support Programme: includes plans for eight support and information-giving sessions, with activities and photocopiable handouts;
  • The Conversation Training Programme: includes plans for eight conversation training sessions as well as photocopiable handouts;
  • A VHS Videotape consisting of 27 extracts of everyday conversations between people with aphasia and their partners, which can be used as a resource both for assessing everyday conversation and for facilitating change.
